March's Block

This month's block is a sewing machine, but not just any sewing machine, but the sewing machine from my childhood. It was quite a workhorse and made many dresses for my sisters and I when we were growing up. It's the machine I first learned on when I was a teen. Then mom got a new machine, but this one wasn't forgotten, it was the sewing machine mom started quilting on when we would first start sewing quilts together. We made several 'Trip Around the World' quilts together when we first started quilting in the 80's. Now we go to quilt retreat (or have quilt ins at mom's) with our fancy dancy machines and have just so much fun! I hope you have fun this month and make the sewing machine your own, it doesn't have to be green.

Here are the sewing machine pieces all ready to be
ironed onto my 10 1/2" square.
After I was done with my buttonhole stitch I used a backstitch
to make the sewing machine needle. I'm thinking of going back and sewing
a line of pink thread to match the spool of thread.  I had a ton of fun
digging thru my button jar for some pretty buttons to sew on after I
get the quilt quilted.
I'm not sewing any of the embellishments on until after I quilt the quilt. I find it helpful to put my buttons in a zippie bag and label what block the buttons go to. This will make it easier to know what goes where when you do all of the finishing touches later this year.

This month's pattern is available for FREE HERE! and also HERE

  3. What a neat block! What sewing machine was it? My mom had an old, green, sewing machine that she gave to me when my kids were born. It was a Spiegel (from the catalog) but I don't know who really made it. It was also a workhorse but weighed a ton (or maybe 50 pounds) and I sold it in a garage sale when it began having trouble. I so wish I had kept that machine.
