October's Block Grandma's Attic BOM

Happy October! The leaves are turning here in Minnesota and it is stunning. Hubby and I are looking forward to a weekend up north in a week. It'll be fun to go to the northern shore of Minnesota and walk some of the trails. It'll be a nice getaway from our work at home life. We look forward to the change of scenery even though I do believe we will miss the fall colors peak up north, oh well. I have been enjoying the change of season so it is fitting that this month's block is a traditional Maple Leaf block. 

 You can use all the same color or make your block scrappy by using several red fabrics. So go to the Quilt Doodle Website and download the pattern. Let's get started!

To begin with, follow the directions on the PDF that you download and cut out all of your pieces, and label as shown on the pattern. Feel free to make your block scrappy if you would like. Have fun, relax and sew.

Starting with the triangles labeled ‘B’, sew the ‘light’ and ‘dark triangle pieces together. Iron. Trim these triangle squares to measure 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" squares. I use a scant 1/4" seam on my machine, your machine may be different. You will make a total of 16 triangle squares, 4 for each block.

Using the red rectangles labeled D and the cream/white triangles labeled C, construct the stem block following the diagram below.

Make a total of four stem blocks, one for each leaf block. These blocks will measure 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" square. 

Following the diagram on your PDF pattern, lay out your block pieces to form the block and sew each 'row'.

Then sew the rows together matching up the seams. Iron. Trim the block to measure 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". Make 4 blocks total.

And then sew the four leaf blocks together to  make one large 20 1/2 " x 20 1/2 " block.

July's Block

Welcome July! I feel like summer is getting away from me. July always flies by quickly for me. It's a busy month, we have a lot on the calendar to make the month fly by... 4th of July, our anniversary, a trip to the cabin and then the day to day shenanigans to fill in between. Although the 4th will be a little quieter then usual, we still plan on celebrating with a picnic and fireworks in our own backyard. 

This month's block is based on the classic Ohio Star block. You will need three different fabrics. My block below shows three different reds. You can use different colors, A dark, medium and light toned fabric. It's up to you! Make the quilt your own. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's variations of the same block. Well, I'm off to go and check on the gardens. We've had so much rain here over the last few days. (7" last Sunday night) My poor plants are drowning, I'm hoping on a couple of hot dry days to dry the ground up a bit. The dahlia bulbs I planted last month are all up and thriving, I'm looking forward to when they bloom. The rain knocked all my zinnias and sunflowers over. I'm going to see if I'm able to stake them up so they can stand tall again. Then I'm going to hide out in my sewing room and get some stitching done!

June's Block Grandma's Attic BOM

Welcome June! I spent yesterday weeding my strawberry patch and I'm not moving very fast today. Found a few muscles I've forgotten that I have! Being it's garden season I thought an easy block was called for. Many of us are getting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather, especially after being cooped up for so long. I have to say, it did feel really good to pull weeds while basking in the sunshine. I certainly got my vitamin D for the day!

This month's block is based on an easy peasy nine patch. You can use all the same fabric for the dark fabric, or you can mix it up. Have fun with it.

You will make four nine patch blocks....

And then sew the four nine patch blocks together to  make one large 20 1/2 " x 20 1/2 " block.

Well, I'm off to go plant some dahlia bulbs from our cousin and then if I'm not too horribly sore, I'm going to start planting the garden. Hubby got it all worked up for me so I need to get things planted!

May's Block

Happy May Day! Things are greening up here in Minnesota and I'm dreaming of warm days spent in my garden. I've made a big ol' list for the greenhouse and have started seeds here at home. I'm quite proud of myself for keeping them alive so far! I invested in some grow lights and it seems to be making all the difference. I started seeds at the beginning of the whole 'lock down' thing with the help of Amazon. I sorta went into prepper mode thinking what if this lasts longer then we think and I couldn't live without being able to garden. The governor has just extended our stay at home orders for another two weeks. I could cry.... Mother's Day is a bust... sorta sucks because we won't be able to get everyone together for our annual luncheon with all my sisters at mom's. I'm not sure what we're going to do for Mother's Day at this time. So I'm planning on breaking the governor's rules and driving to my mom's to plant her flowers at least. I know I won't be able to give her a big giant hug but I can at least visit with her at a distance in the backyard. I really miss seeing her in person but I'm grateful for technology and being able to visit face to face on the phone. I'm done whining.... 

 If you are new to the BOM here's the details.... There will be a new block design each month for a total of 12....  it will be a traditional sampler quilt. I'm planning it as a stash buster. It's based on two colors, a main color and a white/cream background color. You can choose any color for your main color, blue, red, green, anything....I'm making mine out of red fabrics. I have a lot of red Civil War fabric on hand, so that is what I'm using for mine. So go raid your stash for some fabric. You will need;

4 1/2 yards white/cream

4 yards red

1/2 yard red for binding

5 1/3 yard for backing

The finished size is 67" x 87"

Let's get started on this month's block, it's a spin off of a Snail Trail Block. The Snail Trail block is a spiral type block, sorta like a log cabin as you start in the center and it 'grows' with each section you add on.  You will need 1 red (or colors of your choice) You will make four blocks and then sew them together to make a large 4 block square. So go to the website and download the directions, grab a cup of coffee or some pop and let's go sew.

Following the directions cut out all of your squares and triangles...

Starting with the squares labeled D, sew together making a 4-patch block. Iron. This is the center of the Snail Trail block. Then add the B triangles. Line up the center of the long side of the triangle with the seam of the 4 patch block. Sew a 1/4" seam. Iron. As you can see the red triangles and the white (background) triangles are opposite of each other on the block. Placement is everything to get the 'swirl'.

Then add the C triangles. Line up the center of the long side of the triangle with the center of the side seam of the block. Iron. Remember the red triangles and the white triangles are opposite of each other on the block.

Now it's time to add the A triangles onto your block.  Iron. The block measures 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". Make 4 Snail Trail Blocks total. Sew the 4 blocks together to form a 20 1/2" x 20 1/2" block.

Happy April! It has been a surreal few weeks... I've lost time and feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I can say though, quilting has been keeping me sane. I can actually relax if I'm quilting and listening to an audiobook. I'm sure I'm not alone! Many of us have been busy making facemasks, working on UFO's and actually completing them! I've enjoyed seeing the postings of last year's BOM completed by many quilters over the last couple weeks. It warms my heart to see finished quilts. This month's block is super easy... 

 If you are new to the BOM here's the details.... There will be a new block design each month for a total of 12....  it will be a traditional sampler quilt. I'm planning it as a stash buster. It's based on two colors, a main color and a white/cream background color. You can choose any color for your main color, blue, red, green, anything....I'm making mine out of red fabrics. I have a lot of red Civil War fabric on hand, so that is what I'm using for mine. So go raid your stash for some fabric. You will need;

You will need 1 red (or colors of your choice) You will make four blocks and then sew them together to make a large 4 block square. So go to the website and download the directions, grab a cup of coffee or some pop and let's go sew!

Following the directions cut out all of your squares and triangles... then start by making the triangle squares, pair together the cream A and red A triangles, right sides together. Sew along the diagonal edge. Press. Make a total of 16 triangle squares blocks.

Following the diagram below and the block layout, sew your Shoo-Fly Block together. 

Make 4 total. These single blocks measure 10 1/2" x 10 1/2".

Sew the 4 blocks together to form this month's block.
