Quilt Retreat...

I had such a wonderful time on quilt retreat. I really needed the break to get away from my everyday school job and work on some projects. Just getting away and having an extra day off from work was fantastic. I'm really hoping that my quilt designing will soon become my 'job'. I love my summers because then my quilt designing is my full time job.  My focus needed to be getting ready for International Quilt Market at retreat this year... (I'm very excited to be going, but, have a list as long as I am tall.) I packed all of my ideas, started projects and a sketch of what I want my booth to look like. I brought my laptop with my pattern drafts and I went to retreat with big plans. Why does the weekend go by so very fast? I know we lost an hour on Sunday..... but it felt like I lost a day. My sister was a sweetie and helped me cut out pieces for Sample Spree and appliqued for me.  But I woefully didn't get as much done as I envisioned... mom kept telling me to make a list. I should have made out a list before I went. At retreat I would stare at my bins of fabric and sewing machine and my mind would start to race and panic would set in as I fretted over everything I wanted to get done... then mom would say, "Cindy, make a list.... you will feel better if you could cross things off your list." She was right.... I needed a list. Since being back from retreat, I have made out my list and I'm happy to say I have crossed a couple of things off the list, even if it's while I'm sitting  at my desk at work.

So let me share a few pictures from retreat....

All packed and ready to go... I left right after work...
On the first day I got up so early the moon was still shining.....
We had tons of space to work in....
I finally got all of my little do dad's sewn onto my Minnesota Winter Wonderland quilt.
Tessa was not impressed with my winter quilt, she sat and slept in her comfy chair
while I sewed on my little buttons and other do-dads onto my quilt....
Here's a sneak peek of a table runner pattern I'm
getting ready for market....
Mom got this beautiful five yard quilt done.
It features a lovely bird print.
Gracie enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace while
we sewed. I have to say it was pretty comfy cozy by the fire.
I also spent a fair amount of time sitting by the fire.
Laura got this lovely quilt top done.
She's planning on adding a silhouette of a couple
and a wedding date to the quilt. It's going to be fabulous
when it is finish.
Awesome shirt, if it's ever missing, it's at my house!
After her bird quilt, mom worked on this teddy bear quilt.
She used leftover scraps from past projects.
I love the added borders! So cute!
It was so much fun to go on retreat and see Colleen and Ann, our gracious hosts. I can't believe it's our 10th year going to Cozy Home Quilt Retreat! We were their first guests. It's hard to believe that that much time has passed. We are looking forward to our visit in August. Well, I've got to go get back to my list, and try to accomplish something that I can cross off 'the list'.

Happy Quilting,

Minnesota Winter Wonderland

I want to thank you all for following along this last year and also a huge Thank you to my fellow quilters that took the time to blog about their finished quilts. I am humbled and thrilled with everyone's results and am in awe with everyone's use of color and creativity.

I designed this quilt while mourning the loss of my dad and having this project to do got me through a pretty tough year. Many of the items in this quilt remind me of dad, my first snowman was built with dad's help when we moved to New York when I was in second grade. (The first time I had ever seen snow!) Our family spent a week every summer at a cabin fishing, many great memories, so glad it's one of our traditions we still have going. I spent many mornings having coffee with dad as he worked his crossword puzzle. My last night spent with dad was watching the Christmas tree lights, (we had a bed set up in the living room... my sisters and I took turns sitting with dad at night so mom could rest.) We had the tree lights on 24-7 so that dad could enjoy the Christmas tree. So I must let you all know how grateful I am to have all of you during this last year. You all helped me out without ever really knowing it. Quilting is therapy for the soul, something special about needle and thread and quilting friends. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I also want to thank everyone for their lovely comments for the quilters that I hosted during the blog hop. I'm sure they were thrilled to hear from you all and loved your sweet comments.

Now onto my quilt, alas, it's still at the quilter's! She always does such a lovely job. Stacy is quilting my quilt with an over-all mitten squiggle design...  I didn't want to leave you empty handed so I made some special additions for my quilt which I have named, 'Minnesota Winter Wonderland'.
I have a special label all ready to be sewn on the back...
A pretty pillowcase to go with my quilt....
with happy snowmen made out of a yo-yos...
Happy Quilting,

Jill's Quilt Doodle BOM 2014

Welcome to the last day of the Quilt Doodle BOM 2014 blog hop. It has been so much fun to see everyone's quilts. Today I am hosting Jill's quilt. She is a very talented quilter and I love how her 2014 BOM quilt turned out.  Here's a note from Jill and pictures of her lovely quilt....

"This was my first BOM...the snowmen captured my attention, and I hoped this was a project I could complete!  I enjoyed seeing the new pattern every month from Cindy, and I stayed on task, surprisingly, for the entire project! :) I do plan to add more quilting and embellishments in the next few months-I wanted to display the quilt for the holidays, and time got away from me.

I made this quilt for me, however all 3 of my daughters-in-law want to claim it as their own!  Which of course makes me pretty happy!  We'll see how this plays out, but I hope to make 2 more winter quilts and gift one to each of them.

I changed a few of Cindy's blocks to make my quilt more winter, rather than Christmas so I could use it all winter.  I put the row of skates aside to use on the back of my quilt, and when it came time to piece the backing, my skate blocks were nowhere to be found!  I completed my quilt, and while cleaning/ organizing my sewing room prior to holiday company, guess what I found??? Yep, the skate blocks! I will use them on Cindy's 2015 BOM, so I am already ahead of schedule, right? :)

Thank you very much, Cindy, for sharing your time and talent with us! Can't wait to see our 2015 quilt take shape!"

Let's leave Jill some sweet comments and remember to visit today's bloggers... I will be announcing winners tomorrow.

Deb's BOM 2014 Quilt!

Welcome to day 2 of the  Quilt Doodle BOM 2014 blog hop. It has been so much fun to see everyone's quilts so far. Today I am hosting Nancy's quilt. I love her use of the light and dark blues and how her quilt turned out.  Here's a note from Nancy and pictures of her lovely quilt....

"I am so excited to have this opportunity to participate in my first ever blog hop! This was also the  first BOM I have ever been a part of. I have been quilting for ten years, but because I do so many other crafts, I still have so much to learn and practice. This quilt was fun and helped me brush up on my skills with rulers and my rotary cutter. Using these tools has always been my least favorite part of quilting!

I did have some frustrating times too. When putting together the quilt top I discovered the block of lights was too long. Yes, I know, I didn't measure! I did the block and just put it to the side. Some how I ended up putting a extra row between each group of lights! So I had to rip out and re-sew and touch up my embroidery for the light string. Oh well, I always say my seam ripper is my favorite tool.

So far I only have the quilt top completed. I will probably hand quilt it and keep it basic. I'm not sure if it will stay with me or become a Christmas gift.  I'm leaning towards a gift, I'll be that much ahead come Christmas time.

I love Cindy's designs! They have everything I enjoy creating in them. Applique, embroidery and quilting.....so much fun! In fact, I  already have the first two blocks done for the 2015 BOM.

Thanks so much for hosting me Cindy, and thanks for sharing your sweet patterns!"

I  like the red and white borders, very nice!
Love Nancy's embellishments and the cute mugs.
Cute holly embellishment... love the light string too!
A cute snowman greeting visitors... very nicely done!

Let's leave Deb some sweet comments and remember to visit today's bloggers... I will be announcing winners January 27th. Remember visitors that leave comments can win too!

Liz's Quilt for the BOM 2014... 'Winter Warmth'

Welcome to the  Quilt Doodle BOM 2014 blog hop. It has been so much fun to see everyone's quilts. Today I am hosting Liz's quilt. She is a very talented quilter and I love how her 2014 BOM quilt turned out. I enjoyed watching her progress thru flickr each month.  Here's a note from Liz and pictures of her lovely quilt....

"I decided to make this BOM when I saw the first design--I love snowmen! I think 2014 is the first year I actually sewed along with a BOM. While I did begin a number of BOM's, Quilt Doodles was the first and only one so far that I have completed and given away. When I started, I didn't know what I would do with it--or if I would actually finish it! I was moving along each month until we got to the first one with applique--I think it was the hot cocoa mugs-I almost bailed. I had never done applique before and the thought of it scared the heck out of me, but by then, I had decided to donate the quilt to the auction fundraiser for the school where I work. This was a good thing, because now I was committed--to the project I mean( but my husband and kids would probably agree I needed to be committed in the other sense). The only potential problem I saw was that the last block pattern-the Christmas lights-was posted in October, and the fundraiser date was November 6th. They needed all prizes by the beginning of November, so this gave me a month to complete the October block, put all the pieces together-I did plan ahead and have all the other blocks sewn together, sandwich, quilt and bind. Somehow, I did get all of this done and the quilt to the committee in the nick of time. My one disappointment was that I couldn't do the embellishments. When I turned the quilt in, they loved it!! We had two prize levels-higher value and lower value-and they put my quilt in the higher value grouping! It was a tricky tray auction, not a bidding type auction. It would have been interesting and exciting to see how much someone would have paid for it. It was cellophaned into a basket, rather than displayed, but we had pictures of the front and back next to the basket. I didn't take a picture of the backing, although you can see a little of it in the picture of the label, but the pattern was of penguins in the snow--it was very cute! I few people at the fundraiser told me they loved the quilt, put tickets in for it and really hoped they won it. Secretly, I was hoping that a parent or staff member would win it so I knew it went to someone who would love where it came from. In the end, it was an aunt of one of our students who won it! She wrote me a lovely thank you note and said that her niece would use it every time she came to visit--and that made me happy!
When I was getting ready to write on the label, I emailed Cindy to ask what she was calling the quilt pattern, but she hadn't named it yet. I named mine "Winter Warmth" and gave Cindy well deserved credit on the label for designing it!
Thanks Cindy for putting together the 2014 BOM and making it so much fun! I'm in for the 2015 BOM but will sadly admit that I've only picked fabric for the January block. I'm going to do my best to dive in and get back to regular quilting when my kids head back to college!"

I love, love, love the backing fabric! Thank you Liz
for the shout out on the label. Your work is beautiful! Love
the quilting!
It warms my heart thinking of a sweet little girl all
snuggled up under Liz's quilt. What a wonderful story...
Let's leave Liz some sweet comments and remember to visit today's bloggers... I will be announcing winners January 27th.

Finishing Touches...

I have been working on some finishing touches on the BOM 2014 quilt. Adding the applique touches is where you can make this quilt your own.

The cabin needed some snow and a wreath on the door....
Stars on the trees...
Stars on the mugs... and some holly too...
White yo-yo's make cute little snowman faces.
I found three little orange buttons for their noses...
I used 4 strands of DMC floss to make their
smiley little faces...
I can't decide if I should use a jingle bell...
or three red buttons on the holly.
A red button and red seed beads finish off the
wreath on the front door of the cabin.
Tiny little seed beads make the sweet little face on my snowman.
I used two black seed beads for the deer's eye.
A little red bead for the deer's nose.
I'm looking forward to our blog hop where we can show and tell about our wintery quilts. Remember to stop back January 24-26th to see everyone's BOM 2014 quilt. Stop back tomorrow for the start of the Quilt Doodle BOM 2015, it will be a year full of "My Favorite Things".

Happy New Year!
