November/Decembers BOM section 2024

We are coming to the end of our BOM and this month's section will take a little time, a few hours, give or take. Now the quilt has a plain background border and then the flying geese border. So make sure to go over to the website and download the FREE directions for Nov/Dec to complete your quilt. Don't have time to make flying geese? No problem, feel free to complete your quilt with a plain border that compliments your quilt. No one will know...

Today I will show you how I completed the flying geese border. I really think it sets the quilt off nicely and is a fun way to finish it off. I love flying geese! I used 4 colors for my flying geese border. If you want to make it scrappier that's up to you. If you do you will need to make a total of 116 flying geese rectangles. The method that I use to make flying geese in the pattern make 4 flying geese rectangles at a time. It sounds like a daunting task but they really do go together quickly with this method! I like to use the no waste flying geese method. So grab a snack and let's get going on making some flying geese! 

Following the pattern directions I cut out my squares for my no waste flying geese. I'm making two color combos for my border. the pink and blue and then the red and green. For each set of not waste flying geese rectangles/blocks you will need 1 larger square and then 4 smaller squares. Keep this in mind if you are making your border scrappier.

To begin with draw a line from corner to corner diagonally on the smaller fabric squares as shown.

With right sides together, lay two of the smaller squares on the larger square as shown.

Sew a scant 1/4" seam on each side of the line.

Cut apart on the drawn line. Press the seams outward.

Add a small square, right sides together on the sewn unit. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the line.

I like to chain sew....

Cut apart on the drawn line. Press the flying geese units open. Square up to measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". Make 60 using each color combo for a total of 120 flying geese rectangles. (This will be more then you need, you will have 4 extra.)

Following the pattern sew together the flying geese blocks for the border.

I'm just in love with how festive this looks! I'm all ready to assemble my quilt.

Songbird Holiday Cardinal Wreath Table Runner

Have you seen my Songbird Holiday panel yet? It's lovely and perfect for celebrating winter and the holidays. The panel and coordinating fabric can be found in quilt shops and online now. I have several free patterns available to go with this line and they can be found on my website as a FREE PDF download. Today I'm going to show you one of the cute table runners I made using extra blocks and portions of the panel that I fussy cut.

When I made the Quick as a Wink and Songbird Holiday Festive Bows quilts, I cut extra blocks knowing that I would use them in some extra projects. I figure why not chain sew and get it all done at once while watching a series on my iPad or listening to an audio book. I try to multitask when I can, lol. 

These lovely Ohio Star blocks made it easy for me to work with to come up with some free projects for you. What's nice about these free patterns, you could easily substitute any of the designs to fussy cut to personalize your project. For the Cardinal Wreath Table Runner Pattern, I feature the cardinals with the wreath from the panel. I took the time to embroider the block but that is totally optional since the design is colored to match the fabric already! For the embroidery on the block I used a combination of DMC and Valdani threads and handstitched it. The listing of thread recommended can be found on the quilt pattern listing under the supplies. 

 

After I got the top all pieced together, I layered it with my backing and batting and used my embroidery feature on my machine and machine quilted a single pass holly quilt design. Repeating it across the entire table runner. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Sunflower Fields....

One of my favorite patterns is Sunflower Fields... it's so bright and cheery. It was the quilt I designed with the sunflower fields of North Dakota in mind. I just love how those flowers follow the sun with their bright cheery faces. The original one is very yellow and gold and the largest size in the pattern. Well, I decided to make the lap sized one up using some of my treasured Bonnie and fabric. I have been saving this fabric for a while, it has traveled to a couple of quilt retreats. I just love, love, love how this version of Sunflower Fieldtu rned out! Let me show you!

Here I have the 'bottom' set of chevrons all sewn together. I just love the scrappy look.

I had several fat quarters of the Bonnie and Camille fabric that I used.

On my design wall, the top section of the quilt waited while I made the Dresden flowers.

Here I have the three Dresden flowers pinned in place along with the stem pieces.

The stems are made from 2 1/2" strips of fabric that is folded in half. Here I am sewing them to the top of the quilt using a 1/4" seam. 

I then fold it over on top of itself and topstitch it in place using a buttonhole stitch.

In the pattern I use a brown thread for the topstitching. For this quilt I wanted a softer look so I am using a white thread.

I top stitch around everything.... flowers and stems....

From all my scraps I make a beautiful scrappy binding.

Isn't it so pretty. I love rolled up scrappy binding!

I then make some yo-yo's for the flower centers and hand stitch them in place.

Now it's my favorite part with this quilt... making the 3 dimensional bumblebee! 

I gather up his little wings...

... then stitch it in place....

Using some pearl cotton, and a running stitch, I embroider the flight of the bumblebee.

Don't forget to embroider his little antennae.

It's the perfect size for snuggling up with a good book. I really like the softer look with this fabric line. So don't be afraid to make a quilt up using very different fabric then what is pictured on the pattern's cover. Have some fun with it and use some of your favorite fabric that you have been saving. You're gonna love how it turns out!

Laundry Day

  I love this quilt, I call it Laundry Day because for one reason or another it reminds me of grandma and fresh laundry. There is nothing better then the fresh smell of clothes just in from the clothesline. Oh that fresh, crisp smell. It's snuggly and wonderful....
I gave the original quilt to my sister for her birthday a few years ago. It dawned on me I need to make another one for my trunk show. I also need one just for myself too! It's a quick and easy weekend quilt. It's a lovely lap quilt size. I featured 'dot' fabric while making this quilt. I have to admit, I'm a dot-o-phobic... sorta scared to buy dot fabric, use dot fabric.  I dug around in my fabric and found a fabulous collection of scraps that I actually bought on Etsy, there were some wonderful dot fabrics included.  I've been saving this fabric to make a quilt.... so I came up with this fun quilt square which is quick and easy to put together.  I hope that you enjoy my quilt.  The pattern for my quilt can be found on Etsy and Craftsy.... I have called it 'Laundry Day'.... the colors are fresh and bright, like clean laundry hanging on the clothes line.

Here is one of my blocks for my quilt.... it measures 12 1/2" (this includes seam allowance) I really like the green dot fabric.

Then there is this block with the blue dot fabric.... love this one too!

Well, as a recovering Dot-a-phobic.... I quilted 'dots' too!  It was a lot of fun to do.

This is one of my favorite go to patterns because is whips together pretty quickly. It's scrap fabric friendly, plays well with jelly rolls and layer cakes. My quilts featured 'dot' fabrics, but this quilt is adorable in any fabric. Moda's Bonnie and Camille would be wonderful made up with this pattern too. This pattern could be easily adapted to make a bigger quilt by doubling the amount of fabric and make a quilt that would be 4 x 6 squares. You could even make a matching table runner for a dresser by just making 3 blocks in a row. Finishing Touches...

I have been working on some finishing touches on the BOM 2014 quilt. Adding the applique touches is where you can make this quilt your own.

The cabin needed some snow and a wreath on the door....

Stars on the trees...

Stars on the mugs... and some holly too...

White yo-yo's make cute little snowman faces.
I found three little orange buttons for their noses...

I used 4 strands of DMC floss to make their
smiley little faces...

I can't decide if I should use a jingle bell...

or three red buttons on the holly.

A red button and red seed beads finish off the
wreath on the front door of the cabin.

Tiny little seed beads make the sweet little face on my snowman.

I used two black seed beads for the deer's eye.
A little red bead for the deer's nose.
