It's hard to believe that it's December 1st already. This last year has flown by and I have to say I'll be happy to welcome 2021! I want to thank everyone that participated in this years Block of the Month. I would love to see your finished quilts! Today's posting is going to be a long one since I will be going over this month's block, showing you the layout of the quilt and also showing you an alternate border that can be done. So let's begin with this month's final block, Road to Oklahoma. The free PDF download can be found on my website.
You will need two different red fabrics along with the background fabric or make your block scrappy by using several red fabrics. So go to the Quilt Doodle Website and download the pattern. Let's get started!
To begin with, follow the directions on the PDF that you download and cut out all of your pieces, and label as shown on the pattern. Have fun, relax and sew.
Following the block layout diagram sew the four rows together as pictured. Sew the four rows together to form the Road to Oklahoma block. Trim the block up to measure 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". |
Sew the block together. Trim the block to measure 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". Make 4 blocks total.
And then sew the four blocks together to make one large 20 1/2 " x 20 1/2 " block.

Now it's time to sew your quilt together! This is the exciting part! Down below is the layout for the quilt. Finishing your quilt is part of this month's directions. So now it's time to sew your blocks together to form the quilt top.
Now you can do one of two things for the border. You can put on a plain white border and leave it at that and put a red binding on the quilt or you can sew on the optional bias wavy strip around the quilt. I dressed mine up with the bias binding strip and the extra binding strip that I had left over will be used for the quilt binding. I also used this same embellishment on my Farm Memories quilt. The tutorial on how to make the bias binding can be found HERE. I used all of my red fabric scraps and sewed them together to make a big fabric sheet. Following the directions for the bias binding, I made a red scrappy bias binding strip. I have enough for binding the quilt also.
Here is my finished Grandma's Attic quilt. I used Paula's Companions by Paula Barnes from Marcus Fabrics. I just love how it turned out. I put the optional bias border on mine. Let me show you some closeups of the quilting that my friend Darci did. Her quilting is amazing! |
My two assistants are ready to go outside....
The monthly FREE pattern is available on my website. I have a special 2020 BOM section on my website. Each month the FREE pattern will be posted. But as soon as the new section or block is out the old block pattern will no longer be a freebie. But it will still be available for a small fee on my website or in my Etsy shop. If you want to share your finished blocks, feel free to post them on Facebook Group (Quilt Doodle Designs Grandmas Attic BOM 2020) and tag me or post them on Instagram tag Quilt Doodle Designs. I love to see everyone's progress as we stitch along together. The Grandmas Attic Facebook group will change it's name on January 1st so don't be alarmed to see the name change to Woodland Holiday BOM 2021. It's the same group, just a different name. I welcome you to post past and present Quilt Doodle BOM pictures and progress.
Remember to post your blocks onto the Facebook Group, it's so much fun to see everyone's progress!
Happy quilting!
Cindy and Belvedere
I'm also planning for the 2021 BOM!
The measurements of the quilt are 65" x 80"
There are 12 easy applique blocks, one each month, a little embroidery. I am making mine out of the Primo Plaid Lumberjacks that I helped design for Marcus Fabrics. It's a mystery quilt... the logo is a big hint.....
