Snow Much Fun Blog Hop

Welcome to the Snow Much Fun mini blog hop. Several of us are sharing out finished quilts. Over the coarse of last year we worked on a block each month on a winter themed snowman quilt. Many of the blocks were inspired by my boys, family and childhood memories. I did my quilts using flannel. One of them were done all in flannel, the other one was done with wool applique. Both quilts turned out to be yummy warm quilts that are fun to snuggle under with a good book next to the fireplace. Today I am sharing with you some of the quilts from other talented sewers that followed along with me last year!

Snow Much Fun Blog Hop!

I decided to change the date because OMG, November is almost done and there's sooooo much to do! If you don't have a blog I can share your posting on the Quilt Doodle Blog. Snow Much Fun! It's November

Did you get a bunch of trick or treaters? We got quite a few and Belvedere enjoyed greeting them all. The weather here was perfect for the kids, not too cold and clear. If Halloween would have fallen on a Friday or Saturday then it would have been perfect. But last night was pretty darn close! My favorite costume for the evening was a blow up tyrannosaurus rex. The costume stood about six feet tall and was pretty awesome for the little kid that flopped around the neighborhood in it! shhhh…. he got a little extra candy for the great costume.

With all the excitement over Halloween, I forgot today is November 1st and I'm late with posting. I wanted to check in with everyone and see how their quilts are coming along.  As you know, I made two quilts. Both are made using flannel. One uses flannel for the applique, the other one uses wool. I love them both but I am really fond of the wool one. I haven't put them out on display in my home yet because Belvedere is fond of laying on my quilts and these quilts need to be available for when I go on my quilt talks and visit guilds so they are tucked safely away. I'll pull them out on for Christmas and display them in the guest bedroom.

Both of my quilts were professionally quilted by Mary Nordeng. Her work is phenomenal. Let me share with you some of the beautiful stitches she graced my quilts with. Her work is bound to inspire you with how you might want to quilt your quilt.

Isn't the back beautiful!

It's hard to see, but there's a snowman quilted in the center nine patch block.

As you can see, there are snowflake designs in each of the border blocks. Scroll work in the sashing and a swirly design around all of the snowmen.

Here is the same block. For the wool quilt, Mary used a meandering design around the snowmen. I love the look of this too!

In the sashing there are holly leaves quilted. Very festive for winter.

The picture isn't great but I want to show you how to sew the snowflakes onto your quilt. As you can see I use white thread and 'embroider' a snowflake over the snowflake button. Bring your needle up from the back at 1, insert needle to back at 2, then up at 3 and down at 4, up at 5 and down at 6. Repeat a few times to securely sew snowflake in place.

The pattern for the nine patch can be found on the Quilt Doodle Designs Website. The nine patch and strip directions are still  Free download this month also.  I will not be sewing my buttons onto my quilt top until after I have it all done and quilted. I also have all past blocks along with the complete pattern set.

Announcing a NEW BOM coming January 1st!
This will be a 12 month BOM series. We will work on our piecing skills along with some applique. It will be an adorable scrappy sampler quilt. More details will be posted soon!

I'll be posting fabric requirements soon. Fabric kits will also be available in my Etsy shop. I'm busy gathering and cutting right now. We will be working with some 1930's reproduction fabric. I just love the freshness of the colors and the retro feel. They'll be perfect for this scrappy style quilt. Keep your eye out for the fabric bundles that will be available in the Etsy shop.

October is here! Let's finish our quilt top!

October is here, it sure feels like fall here in Minnesota. My trees are starting to turn and it is cooler outside. I finally broke down and started the furnace and have pulled out my sweaters. It's soup and baking weather and I have been pulling out some of my family favorites to warm the kitchen. It's hard to believe that we are wrapping up the Snow Much Fun quilt. I hope that you have enjoyed this quilt so far. I'm also getting ready for the BOM for 2019, I have details listed below. I hope that you'll be able to join me in January for this fun quilt!

It's now time to finish up your Snow Much Fun quilt. All that is left is to put on the sashings and border, then you are done! Except for the quilting of coarse. Let's get started...

For the sashing you will need your
Sashing (red)- 1 ½ yards

Cornerstones and Border (green)- 1 ½ yards

Binding (green)- ½ yard

Cut Fabrics

From Sashing fabric (red) cut:

                12 – 3 ½” x wof strips

                                Then cut:

                                                24 – 3 ½” x 14 ½” rectangles

From Cornerstones and Border fabric (green) cut:

                2 – 3 ½” x wof strips

                                Then cut:

                                                16 – 3 ½” x 3 ½” squares (cornerstones)

                8 – 3 ½” x wof strips (border)

Here I am sewing the cornerstone blocks to the sashing pieces.

Following the quilt layout diagram, sew the blocks and sashing sections together to form the quilt top.

Here is the quilt top with only the sashings

Remember the two strips you made last month? Now it's time to sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

Iron.

Quilt Border: To make a pieced border, sew the 8 3 ½” strips together end to end.

                Then cut:

                                2 – 66 ½” strips for the sides of the quilt

                                2 – 60 ½” strips for the top and bottom of the quilt

Layer quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired.

September's Block Snow Much Fun BOM

September is here, it's hard to believe. This year is just flying by! This month's block will take you no time at all to make, it's a simple nine patch for in the center of the quilt and two pieced strips. That means we are all done with the applique blocks for this quilt. Yes, you've gotten all the hard parts done! I bet you are getting excited to see your finished quilt tops soon, I am too! I think it would be fun to show off our finished quilts! So I'm going have a little blog hop so we can share them in December. The center Nine Patch

As you can see a nine patch will take you a few minutes to make, you just make one nine patch. The nine patch is made up of nine 5 1/8" squares, one of each color from the fat quarters. Remember I had you cut these way back in January?

Then after you make the one nine patch, you then make two strips using the 6 1/2" squares, again one of each color to form each strip. These will go on the top and bottom of your quilt after we get to the sashing. (That will be next month's task) Next month, October, we will do the sashing and borders, then your quilt top is all done! This will give you time if you want to quilt and finish it for the holiday season.

August's Block is Out! Snow Much Fun BOM...

Happy August everyone! It's hard to think about winter and seems like so long ago now.  I've got a super cute block to share with you this month, it features a snowman and a sweet little hound dog. This last winter was Belvedere's first and I have to say he didn't mind the snow too much as long as it wasn't sub zero temperatures. Belvedere saw the world as a giant snow cone when he went outside. He enjoyed eating fresh snow and didn't seem to be too concerned about deep snowdrifts. This surprised me since he's got such short stubby little legs. There were times I would just see the top of his head and the tip of his tail as he plowed thru fluffy snowdrifts.

For this month I came up with a sweet snowman pulling his dog on a sled. I had Belvedere in mind when I drew this design up. Basset Hounds are known to 'poop' out on long walks and will melt into the sidewalk when they are done with their walk. It doesn't matter where in the walk you are, you could be blocks from home. Belvedere pulled this stunt when he didn't want to come inside recently. He melted himself to the back patio and there was no moving him until he was good and ready. I'm sure this will also hold true this winter. A sled will come in handy because I'm sure I can get Belvedere on a sled if a treat is involved. My sweet hound dog has a lot of 'bassitude'.

 This is the last applique design you will be doing for this year's BOM. It's hard to believe we are already this far with the quilt! The design is placed on a pieced on point quilt block. 

The on point quilt block will be used for the May thru August applique designs. So let's get started.... First go to my website and download this month's free directions. Remember it's only FREE this month, then there will be a small 2.99 fee after that. So download and print it up NOW even if you don't expect to get to it yet.

Here I have the design elements traced and ironed onto my fabric scraps. I then cut them all out.

Using the block picture as reference I have the pieces placed on the block. I then iron them in place.

After I stitch around the pieces I use a pencil and lightly mark the snowman's face so that I can embroider it with French knots. I have laid the carrot nose on the design to use as a reference for the eye and mouth placement. 

I have also drawn the sled rails so that I can embroider them using a backstitch.

I'm in love with this sweet little hound dog...

~Let's Go Sledding~
