Spring Sampler ~ Flowers and Butterflies

Welcome back! This week we will work on the flower and butterfly blocks! Go to your Season Sampler Spring pattern and follow along. Remember to save all of your scraps for future blocks and quilts.

Each block will measure 8" x 8", this includes the seam allowance.

Gather your fabric, pattern, fusible web, ruler and rotary cutter and let's begin!

This week we will work on the applique flower and butterfly blocks.

Spring Flower Block – Make 2

From background fabric (5): Cut 2 – 8” x 8” squares

For Applique design

From yellow fabric (7): Cut 2 – 2” x 2” squares

From pink fabric (8): Cut 2 – 7” x 7” squares

Following the instructions provided by the fusible web manufacturer, trace 2 sets of the flower shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web. Iron flower onto the back side of the pink fabric. Iron the flower center onto the wrong side of the yellow fabric.  Cut the pieces out. Follow the pattern layout for placement. Center the flower design onto the 8” x 8” fabric background square. Iron in place. Using a blanket, zig zag or satin stitch on your sewing machine; sew along the edges of all the pieces. Practice on some scrap material if you are new to machine applique. Finished block measures 8” x 8” (includes seam allowance).

I used pink thread to go around the edge of the flower and yellow thread to stitch around the flower center. The stitch I used was a small buttonhole stitch, but you can also use a satin stitch.

Butterfly Block - Make 2

Referring to the pattern, cut out all of the pieces and label them to make assembly easier. As you sew the sections together remember to press to the dark side. It is also very helpful to use a quarter inch foot on your sewing machine as you sew this block together.

Following the butterfly block layout in the pattern, sew the upper and lower wing blocks together. There will be two right wings and two left wings, one set for each block. Then sew the cream C rectangle, striped E strip and cream B square together to form the butterfly body.

Following the Butterfly block layout picture, sew the right and left butterfly wing sections to the butterfly body strip. Press. Finished block measures 8” x 8” (includes seam allowance).

I'll see you next Saturday. We will be making the birdhouse and bluebird blocks.

Happy Quilting
