Scrappy Hats QAL Day 6

Welcome to Day 6!

Today we will work on snowman hat brim #5, Pinwheels. Again mix up the colors so that you are not repeating any of the fabrics in this block. This block will take a little longer to complete, I'm guessing a half an hour or so... Pinwheels are one of my favorite blocks to put together. Like yesterday, we will do the same easy technique to complete the triangle blocks. Each pinwheel uses four triangle blocks. We will make three pinwheels for the snowman's hat brim. For my background fabric I pulled a white print out of my fat quarter bundle to use as the background fabric. You can use the same fabric as you used for the background for the quilt, or introduce something new. Again, I encourage you to pull fabric from your fabric stash for this quilt.  So grab a snack and let's go and sew...
Cut the fabric for the block following the pattern...

To make the pinwheel square, begin by mating up the pinwheel fabric squares with the light background fabric squares right sides together. Sew diagonally corner to corner.

Trim away excess fabric and press.

I find it helpful to layout the triangle blocks to form the pinwheel block.

Sew the four triangle squares together to form a pinwheel block. Press. Then sew the three pinwheel blocks together to form the scrappy pinwheel hat brim.

Assemble the Snowman block sewing the hat block to the top of the hat brim strip and then sew the snowman face block onto the bottom of the hat brim strip. Press. The finished block measures 9 1/2" x 11 1/2"

Remember the carrot and eyes are not added to the block yet!

Isn't it fun making snowman blocks! I just love them! If you feel extra ambitious, you can make extra ones for an adorable table runner to match your quilt! See you tomorrow for the next snowman quilt block! Remember to share your block on Instagram #scrappyhatsqal @quiltdoodledesigns

Happy Quilting!
