Star Gazing at the Cabin

I have an idea! I think it's a wonderful notion... let me tell you all about it. Remember last year I showed you my Snowman Snow Globe panel and I wrote the 'Star Gazing' pattern. It's a super easy quilt to piece together using a Rail Fence block and some applique snowflakes.

What if you substituted the Lumberjack Primo Plaids for the blues and used the Woodland Getaway panel? I think it would make for a wonderful winter themed quilt.

What do you think? I'm thinking I need to make one! Here's how I would go about it.

I would substitute the Lumberjack Primo Plaids for colors # 1-4, the center block background, binding and borders. The Snowman Snow Globe is fussy cut into a circle and appliqued onto the center square. Working with the Woodland Getaway would be so much easier. The panel would be cut down to measure 24 1/2" x 24 1/2" and then with the center background fabric, I would cut that into a 2 1/2" border strips to go around the center Woodland Getaway panel. The panel could be left plain or embroidered. I would use a cream cotton fabric that matches the cream on the Woodland Getaway Panel, but I'm pretty sure an off white would work too since the snowflakes and the panel are not close to each other on the quilt.

To make it easy to follow along with the fabric substitutions, make sure to label your fabric for reference. It's fun to take a pattern and think outside the box and use different fabrics. It's not too soon to start those winter projects and Christmas gifts.

Scrappy Hats Quilt!

I'm a little slow, but I finally have my Scrappy Hats quilt done! I got hung up on doing the binding, my least favorite part of completing a quilt. I also decided to make a flanged binding instead of the traditional binding method I wrote in the pattern. I'm really happy with how it turned out. In time to display for Christmas. I'll actually have it out all winter long since we'll have snow until March, it's Minnesota. I love how happy and bright it turned out. It'll brighten up those winter days when it's dreary outside. I used tiny black buttons for the snowman eyes.

My happy face when all those buttons are finally sewn on. 

For the binding I did a flanged binding out of green and red to finish the edge of my quilt off. I do like making flanged bindings, it just takes a bit of extra time. 

I took a quick picture outside in the snow. Do you see the snowflakes I quilted in the plain squares. I have an embroidery machine and found some quilting files that were perfect for this quilt.

Scrappy Hats QAL Day 3

Welcome to Day 3!

Today we will work on snowman hat brim #2. It's another super easy block and will only take you a few minutes to complete. The pattern does not list what fabrics to use for your hat brims. Just to make it scrappy and have fun with it. This way your quilt will have a personality all of its own. I want to give you space to be creative and have fun mixing up the colors. If you are using a limited number of fat quarters and not pulling out of your stash of fabric... to make it scrappy, rotate thru your fat quarters. Never using the same fabric as the main hat rectangle in the block that you are working on. I'm hoping by doing this it will disperse the colors throughout the quilt.  You can also just follow along and match up the colors that I have printed on the quilt layout page too if you don't want to mix it up with your own colors. I posted yesterday's snowman block just as a refresher in case some of you missed yesterday.

~Snowman Block Easy Squares~

I have shown here the block with the applique nose and two button eyes. We will work on noses another day... the button eyes are not sewn on until we are finished quilting the quilt.

Following the pattern for size, cut out three fabric strips. I did 2 red and 1 pink strip. Sew these together along the 'long' side right sides together using a 1/4" seam.

 Sew this strip to the snowman face and the main hat rectangle. Press.
