July's Block

July is here and it's time for the BOM for this month.I am a little slow to get the block out. (I'm so sorry...) I will do a better job next month! I was knee deep in Grad party stuff and I haven't been in my sewing room since the last block was released! The party was wonderful and now that it's over, I am now looking forward to some serious sewing time. I can't believe that July is here and the 4th is just in a couple of days! Wow the time flew!
I love the 4th of July, I have many fond memories of spending time at my grandparent's farm during the 4th. Grandma always had a huge gathering for the 4th and there were always lots of food and fireworks. So in the spirit of the 4th, I am naming this months block  'Jumping Jack Blossom'. The finished size of the block is 12" x 12". This time it's a paper piecing block. I thought that paper piecing would be the easiest way to complete this block due to the angles. I hope that you have fun making the block. The printable pattern can be found on Craftsy. Past patterns can be found for a small $1.99 fee at my Etsy and Craftsy shops just in case you are just joining the BOM or have missed one.
Let me show you how I completed my 'Jumping Jack's Blossom' block....
I chose these fabrics for my block, 1 cream for the background and
3 coordinating fabrics.

I printed up the pattern on my computer printer...

I find it easier to do foundation piecing (paper piecing) when I work with  fabric strips.
Here I have one of the sections cut out ready to do my paper piecing.
I work one pattern page at a time so that I don't get them mixed up.
I find it easier for fabric placement if I write the colors in each of the
block sections.

One of the foundation pieces in the pattern for this block needs to
be cut out and taped together since it didn't fit on the pattern sheet.

Here it is all ready to go!

See how I am lining up the fabric, right sides together on the back of the foundation piece?

Sew on the line....

Finger pressed, I like to use pins too to make sure the
fabric doesn't shift.

If you look really close you can see where my sewing line is...

One section is ready to be pieced together. Do you see what I did wrong?
I thought I should discard this picture, but let me
point out to you that it is LAID OUT WRONG!!! Please double check your 'lay-out' before
sewing. I had to use 'Jack The Ripper' a couple of times.

Sewing sections together...

This section is done!

Here's another section.... I have left all of the foundation
paper in place. When the block is done... then sew an 1/8 inch
stay stitching all around the outer edge before you remove
the paper.

The block is all ready to be pieced together...

  13. Your BOM looks like fun. I wish I didn't have so many quilts to finish which actually are from BOMS and Challenge BOMS. Anyways love your Jumping Jack Blossom block. Paper piecing definitely was the was to go with this block. I am a new follower.

  14. This is a really pretty block - the paper piecing makes it accessible for folks who just can't do those pesky Y-seams. :)
