It's A Wonderful Life....

I found something I never expected to find... an old Singer sewing machine that reminds me of my Grandma. I was on Facebook and there listed in the Lakeville Garage Sale Forum was a sewing machine cabinet for $25. It looked just like my grandma's so I immediately messaged the seller that I was very interested. I went to take a look and had to restrain myself from jumping up and down and screaming when I opened the cabinet to find a sewing machine tucked in there. Seller say's "oh, yeah.... it comes with the machine... everything's in the drawers..." Whooooo hoooo! I paid the nice man, thanked him and loaded the cabinet in my truck and made a quick get-away. (I felt like I had just gotten away with robbing the bank!) I drove home on all side streets like a little ol' grandma until I got home. Hubby came home seeing my find as soon as he drove in the driveway.  He greeted me with his, "what did you go and do now..." smile. I grinned back from ear to ear...

I looked up the serial number today and this machine was made December 20, 1946. The same day that there was a special charity premier of 'It's a Wonderful Life' at New York City's Globe Theater. The official premier was the next day. 'It's a Wonderful Life' is my hubby's favorite Holiday movie and we watch it every Christmas. So I think it's fitting to call my new machine 'George'.

The designs on the metal plates are beautiful...
The gold is worn, so someone loved to sew with it at one time...
I wonder what stories this machine could tell...
I've been asked, am I going to sew with it. Well I sure hope so... I will have to do a little restoration on it. The motor runs and sounds surprisingly good. The machine needs a belt and a new light. Although I'm not sure if it needs a light. I have these items on order. After I install these, then I'll see what George may need also. I also need to find a nice place to display George. Right now he is sitting right in the middle of my already cluttered sewing studio. Lucy and Ethel shouldn't be too jealous of the new machine... George is a sweet fellow... lol... I'm on my way back to my sewing room to admire my new machine. It's such a wonderful life...

Happy quilting,

  3. I would much prefer to sew and piece with a vintage machine. They sew with any thread and make beautiful stitches!

  9. I love your machine. Just last week I found a 1904 Singer treadle at a garage sale. It was in great condition, in the original cabinet (as far as I can tell), and is old enough to have a vibrating shuttle instead of a bobbin. It also has the original wooden box of attachments! Wonderful what you can find.
