January's BOM Blocks

Welcome! It's the very beginning of the My Favorite Things mystery BOM. I'm so excited!!! For January there are two blocks that we will be working on, a snowman and a Christmas tree. Two of my favorite things. They are both applique. In fact all of the blocks with the exception of December's will be applique.  As I mentioned, it will be a mystery quilt but I have let you in on the layout of the quilt. This quilt can be done scrappy if you want to bust your fabric stash. Each month I will offer a NEW block and it will be FREE for that month, as soon as the next block comes out, past blocks will be available for a small fee....
I traced all of the pieces onto the heat n bond. Drawing in pencil on the paper side of the heat n bond.
Then I iron on the pieces onto the wrong side of the fabric
 and cut them all out.
Then peel off the paper and lay them onto the front
side of your block. Iron in place. The snowman is
placed on a 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" square.
Lay all of the pieces in place for the Christmas
Tree design also. Iron them in place. Remember it will
be a mirror image of the design you traced. The Christmas
Tree design is placed on a 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" rectangle.
I like to machine applique my pieces using a tiny
buttonhole stitch. Here is the setting I use on my machine.

You can also do the stitching by hand using 2 strands of
DMC floss. This is a good project for in front of the TV.
Here, you can see how small my stitches are. I think
the smaller stitch looks nicely with the scale of the design.
Practice with you machine and experiment with your stitch
size until you find the stitch size that you like.
I go slow to while I applique and stop and pivot around corners.
January Snowman! I embellished the block with some
buttons, beads and embroidery.
'Christmas Tree'
The tree is decorated with brightly
colored buttons.

  14. What an adorable quilt this is going to be! Thank you for doing this and sharing :)

If I may make one small suggestion, as a longarm quilter, it is better to add your button and bead embellishments after it is quilted as the quilter won't be able to quilt close to them.

Again, thank you for your generosity!
