New To Me...

I've been on spring break this last week and have been putting off marking a quilt for quilting. Marking a quilt is one of my least favorite things, next to pinning it. I usually free motion quilt a project and just 'wing it' just to avoid marking the quilt top. One of the reasons is that it is sooooo time consuming. Another reason is the blue marking pen which is water soluble doesn't away go away with water!

At retreat a couple of the ladies talked about the Quilt Pounce. While out fabric shopping with mom yesterday, I bought one at Hancock Fabrics. I watched a couple of videos on You Tube last night and it seems easy enough to use. I don't know if it will improve my outlook on marking a quilt, but it's worth a try. Remember the Civil War Style quilt I pieced on retreat, well I want to quilt feathers on it. (I also picked up another feather stencil) I have been known to freehand feathers while quilting but I need the feathers for my Civil War quilt to be more 'structured'.
I've gathered my stencils....

This one won't work well with the pounce, I don't want the open areas to show up in white chalk on my quilt.

Love this stencil, but shoot! It's too big!

I've settled on using these designs.

My new pounce...

Here's the reservoir to put the powder in. The powder is super fine!

Fill the reservoir.

The first time the pad is filled, firmly pat the pad into the palm of your hand to get the powder to flow evenly.  I had to pat the pad a good minute to get it to flow good.

Wipe the pad across your stencil. I went over it a few times to get a good line. I'm sure this is because my pad is 'new'. Once your pad is well saturated with the powder it doesn't take much powder to actually transfer the stencil.

It marks pretty well! I'm sold. I tried rubbing it off in one area, and I had to work at it pretty hard to remove it. So I think the marking will hold up to moving my quilt around while I quilt it. I don't have a longarm. I just use my favorite machine for quilting. According to the tutorials I watched online, the marking held up. I'll let you know!

I'm going to quilt the quilt with a variegated thread, I'll post the results!
I'm off to finish marking my quilt, the Pounce is slick to use. I do prefer it over using a marking pen. I have a lot of marking to do on this quilt. (Which remains nameless) It will be a pattern that I will have available soon. Hoping to have it ready for the Spring Quilt Market.

Happy quilting,
PS~ The Quilt Doodle BOM 2013 is still on~going.... hope that you're able to join me!

  1. I've bought one of these, along with a stencil to mark my double wedding ring quilt. Haven't used it yet. Just waiting for some cooler weather here and will give it a go.

  2. I have wondered about that, I just can't help but think that I would brush off the markings while manipulating the quilt as I quilt it. Do you quilt on a domestic, like I do OR on a longarm?

  5. I've had a pounce for years. I tried it once on something I hand quilted. Well the chalk wears off before I could even get a small portion quilted. I have not tried it doing machine quilting. I quilt on a domestic machine and not a long arm. Probably would brush off quickly if you move the quilt around too much on a domestic machine? I'll be looking forward to seeing how it works for you. I may give mine another try if it works well for you.

  6. Hope the pounce works for you. It is well used by longarm quilters and comes out easily when you finish with it.
Can't wait to see the civil war pattern. The fabrics look beautiful. Great use of your feather stencils.

  7. I use Pounce and it works great for me. I use it on small quilting projects on my domestic machine and larger quilting projects on my Longarm. I like it better then the marking pens on the market...even better than the pen marks that disappear with ironing. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading through your site.

  8. I saw this demoed at my LQS. Except she used a small foam paint brush. She said it gave her more control and less waste of the chalk.
