Feeding the Rebels & Draft Threat

Eldress Nancy Elly Moore lived here
during the Civil War.
Nancy Elly Moore looks like such a sweet lady in Rosemary's book.  I love the picture of her sitting in her checkered dress.  A dear sweet grandmother type...  She lived at the South Union Shaker settlement during the civil war.  You can visit the Shaker site at http://www.shakermuseum.com/galleries/index.cfm

So now let's get sewing on 'Feeding the Rebels' & 'Draft Threat', the first two blocks from the Nancy Elly Moore section of the 'Civil War Diary Quilt' book by Rosemary Youngs...
I chose fabrics that resembled the colors shown in the book.

This block is done easily with paper piecing.  The block is broken down into three sections.  If you draft the pattern from the book remember to add 1/4" seams around the three sections.  I write in the fabric colors in each block.  The foundation paper that I am using was printed from my computer using Rosemary Youngs companion CD for 'The Civil War Diary Quilt' Book.  Being able to print up the foundation papers has saved me tons of time.

Sewing on the lines while paper piecing 'Feeding the Rebels'... notice I sew past the 1/4"  seam lines.

'Feeding the Rebels' sections are done but not trimmed up yet...

The 'back' of my block after I trimmed up the sections, all ready to be put together.

Sewing the sections together, sewing on the 1/4" seam line.  Remember to match your seam up before you sew so that you get those nice clean seams.

'Feeding the Rebels' all done!

My fabric choices for the block 'Draft Threat'

This block is also paper pieced, but all one big section.  Pictured here is the foundation paper for 'Draft Threat' printed from the companion CD that Rosemary Youngs has available to go with her book.  This block has 29 sections to it.  If you don't have the companion CD you can easily trace the block from the book onto a piece of paper adding 1/4" seam allowance around the outside edge.

Paper piecing the block, sewing on the lines for each section...

'Draft Threat' all done!

Next week I will be working on 'Southern Notes' from the Civil War Dairy Quilt Book.  Although I will be posting late on Sunday since I will be on Quilt Retreat with my mom, sister and a dear friend.  Looking forward to spending some time with my quilting buddies and having three uninterrupted quilting days!  So many things to work on!  Where do I begin!  Must think about what to pack....

Happy quilting!
